8 Easy to Forget About Household Items

Bacteria can lurk around your home and compromise the health and well-being of your family. These nasty germs are often found in some ignored household items, which could be well past their prime and ready for replacement. Take a look around your home and get rid of these simple things that could be fostering bacteria, germs, and illness.

Are these household items ebbing into their expiration?

Your toothbrush. Replace your toothbrush regularly; don't wait until you drop it in the toilet or it loses bristles to buy a new one! Better yet, watch for sales on oral hygiene products and stock up on toothbrushes for the whole family.

Kitchen sponges. Think about all of the things that you wipe, clean, and swipe with your kitchen sponges. It is no wonder that these are breeding grounds for bacteria that can contaminate cooking surfaces and the food that you prepare. Toss kitchen sponges out after a few uses.

Over-the-counter medications. Old and outdated medications, pain relievers, and vitamins are not only ineffective, but they could be dangerous if ingested. Always check the dates on your household meds and toss out when they expire.

Cosmetics. Do you ever check the expiration dates on your hygiene products and makeup? If these items become old, they can be breeding grounds for bacteria that are then transferred to your face, skin, and hair.

Water filters. Your water filtration system, pitcher, or bottle can't do its job if the filter is old or dirty. Make sure to make a note of when you change the filter, and replace regularly according to the manufacturer's directions. If you consume a lot of filtered water, you may want to replace more often.

Sometimes the simple things can get overlooked amid busy schedules, work, and family. Take time to assess these often-overlooked items and replace them if necessary. This is a positive step toward reducing bacteria and preventing illness this season!
