To Grille or Not to Grille? What's Better for Your Sound and Speaker?

The speaker grille is often an important element of the speaker. This hard or soft cover usually protects the driver, so it interacts with the sound quality. Many people wonder if they need a speaker grille or not. There's not really a right or wrong answer, it's more about preference. Let's take a look at what the grilles do and whether you should leave them alone or take them off.

Grille-d for Protection

The grilles are designed to be a dust cover. Taking them off means that you will have to regularly clean the drivers. If you have children or pets, it's probably best to leave the grilles on. Children and cats are notorious for sticking their fingers or paws anywhere they can. Dust and pet hair can build up quite quickly.

Style Reasons

Speakers with a grille generally have a cleaner look than ones that leave the drivers exposed. If you're going for a special look in the room, you should probably leave the grilles on.

Sound quality

Manufacturers generally spend hug amounts on R&D to ensure that the grilles do not affect sound quality all that much, (at least on higher end speakers). That said, some manufacturers also recommend taking the grilles off to achieve the best sound. Other manufacturers take the grilles into account when designing for sound quality.

Sound affects some people much differently than others. Speakers are also different. Take the speaker grille off the speakers and see how it sounds to you. If you notice a big difference, you may want to leave the grilles off. Decide what you like when you're listening to music or watching a movie.
